Backups

Retained copies of required information that can be used in a tested recovery procedure.

What it means

A backup preserves a recoverable copy of selected data or configuration at a point in time. Source code, business data, uploaded files and secrets may need different treatment. The plan should define what is included, where copies are kept, who can access them and how long they are retained. A backup is useful only if the required recovery can actually be completed.

Why it matters to your business

A mistake, failed update or lost account can interrupt a business. Recovery planning clarifies the acceptable loss of recent changes and the time needed to resume work. Copying everything indefinitely can also create unnecessary privacy and access risks, so retention needs a purpose.

A practical example

Restoring more than page files

A small business tool stores approved job records and uploaded documents. Its recovery plan identifies both data sets, the application version and the configuration needed to read them. An isolated restore checks that a permitted user can open a sample record, rather than merely confirming that an archive file exists.

Questions worth asking

Is a Git repository a complete backup?

It can preserve tracked source code. It normally does not include private environment values, live business data or uploads. List the actual recovery requirements instead of assuming that one source repository contains the whole service.

How often should recovery be checked?

Choose a schedule based on the importance and rate of change of the service, then review it after significant changes. A documented, controlled restore provides stronger evidence than a successful copy operation alone.
