The web basics

Domain

The memorable address people use to reach your website, such as example.com.

What it means

A domain is a registered name in the internet address system. Its settings connect that name to services such as a website or email. The domain registration, the server that hosts the site and the mail service can be supplied by different providers. Registering a name reserves its use for a period that must be renewed.

Why it matters to your business

Your address appears on business cards, search results and customer correspondence. Access to its registration and renewal settings is therefore a business responsibility. A hosting change can usually happen while the same address stays in use, if the domain settings are managed carefully.

A practical example

A new server, the same address

A local workshop moves its website to a different hosting provider. The registered domain stays the same. The team first records the existing website and email settings, prepares the new site and then changes only the agreed records so that email is not unintentionally disrupted.

Questions worth asking

Does buying a domain include a website?

A domain provides the name. Design, content, application code, hosting and email are separate items unless the chosen offer explicitly includes them. Ask which services renew separately and who controls each account.

Can we keep the domain when changing supplier?

Usually yes, provided the registration remains valid and the authorized holder can manage or transfer it. Confirm the registrant details, account access, renewal responsibility and any transfer conditions before a move.
